GFA Assists FAWC Enquiry
February 2008
The Game Farmers' Association has given evidence to a Farm Animal Welfare Council enquiry into game rearing methods in the UK.
The enquiry, commissioned by Defra and being carried out by FAWC's Poultry, Pigs and Fish sub-committee, will result in a FAWC 'Opinion' to be published later this year. That in turn will inform the Government's own Code of Practice for game rearing, to be issued further to the Animal Welfare Act 2006.
The GFA Chairman, Pam Kelsey (pictured), and political adviser, Charles Nodder, gave verbal evidence to the FAWC sub-committee at a special meeting in London. This followed a full GFA written submission and a number of game farm visits by FAWC last year, some facilitated by the GFA.
The GFA Chairman said after giving evidence, "It was a good meeting and we welcome this outside look at game rearing methods. An external 'health check' for the industry was something we encouraged Ministers to arrange. We look forward to reading FAWC's 'Opinion' later this year."
