Rearing Code Progress

7 June 2010

The Game Farmers’ Association (GFA) participated today in a final meeting of the Defra Gamebird Working Group, called by the new Minister of State, Jim Paice, to address concerns with certain aspects of the code laid before Parliament by his Labour predecessor.

The meeting, which included representatives from the GFA, NGO, CA, CLA, GWCT, BASC, LACS and RSPCA, discussed raised laying units, the mixing of breeding birds, inspection intervals and the siting of release pens. A form of words for each was decided, for inclusion in a revised code, which will be re-laid before Parliament shortly.

After the meeting, Jonathan Crow, the GFA’s Chairman, said:

“We look forward to the revised code being laid before Parliament. It would be inappropriate to comment in greater detail on its content at this stage but I would like to thank the Minister for withdrawing the flawed code laid by his predecessor and for allowing us all to re-consider it.”

The GFA will be commenting in greater detail when the final text is laid before Parliament.
